Digestive Support for Dogs & Cats

Digestive Support for Dogs & Cats

When vomiting and loose stools plague your pet (and carpet), it can be alarming. Fear not, we've got your back! Digestive problems can be caused by bowel inflammation from allergies, anxiety, changing foods, or hairballs.

Soothe tummy aches with palatable, gentle meals and fast-acting digestive superfoods. Our solutions are a quick remedy to gut issues! But, if symptoms are unmanageable or you see blood in their stools or vomit, talk to your vet immediately.

Digestive Aids: Prebiotics vs. Probiotics

Prebiotics

Prebiotics are fibers that support the growth of beneficial bacteria and flora in your pet’s colon. Prebiotics prevent GI upset and are probably in your dog or cat's food already.

Fiber-rich unsweetened pumpkin, squash, sweet potato, and quinoa are powerful natural prebiotics. If your pet isn't agreeing with their current food, you can top their food with cooked squash puree or look for a food enhanced with pumpkin to boost their gut health.

Probiotics

Probiotics are friendly bacteria that encourage digestion, help fight infections, and make the immune system stronger. Probiotics are found in some foods, but usually need to be supplemented.

Probiotic-rich goat milk, kefir, yogurt, cottage cheese, and bone broth are powerful digestive aids that soothe upset tummies and help pass digestion.

Curing an Upset Tummy

We've been there! So, we know a thing or two about curing an upset tummy. Dog's are more prone to bowel inflammation from allergies, anxiety, and changing foods. While a cat's digestive issues usually center around hairball management. Here is what Team Tomlinson's prescribes for our pets:

It's important to note: If symptoms persist or worsen, reach out to your vet.

Loose Stools

Administer a fast-acting digestive aid immediately or at their next meal. We suggest these:

Vomiting

First, administer a digestive aid (see above) immediately. Feed it slowly so they can keep it down.

Vomiting can dehydrate them quickly. A splash of plain bone broth to their water bowl will entice them to drink and keep them hydrated.

Then, for up to 5 days, feed a bland, palatable diet like boiled shredded chicken or turkey with steamed rice. We broke down the measurement for dogs and cats below!

Don’t want to cook? We feel ya. Try Under The Weather, an easy-to-serve meal of dehydrated rice, chicken, & bone broth. Just add water!

Changing Foods

You can switch foods to solve an ailment, upgrade their diet, or simply for the cost. But, always make sure you monitor their behavior on a new diet. Their diet should give them energy with high-quality protein, boost their immunity with probiotics, and include Omega 3's for a shiny skin & coat. Here are three tips:

1️⃣ Go slow when changing your pet's food, especially to a raw or gently cooked diet. Introduce their new food in increments of 25% for about 7 days. For example, day 1 - 2 would be 75% old food, 25% new food, and day 3-4 would be 50% old food, 50% new food.

2️⃣ If your pet isn't agreeing with their new food, start the changing food schedule over. Do this until your pet can do 100% of the new food without any adverse issues, like diarrhea.

3️⃣ Power up with a probiotic! A splash of goat's milk or kefir from Bones & Co. as a treat or on their meal is an easy way to ensure a smooth transition.

Hairball Management

The days of stepping on cat hairball yak are over! Boost their bowl with a fiber-rich supplement with active ingredients like Miscanthus Grass & Psyllium Seed Husk

Our Team's Favorite hairball supplement is the Hairball Buster from Meowbiotics. Not only does it help past the hair, but soothe their tummy and promote a healthy microbiome.
